Glucose^post CFst
Measures blood glucose level after an 8-12 hour fast using a glucometer.
Why This Biomarker Matters
Fasting glucose is essential for diabetes screening. Elevated levels indicate prediabetes or diabetes risk and warrant lifestyle or medical intervention.

FPG Diagnostic Categories
NIDDK2025
The fasting plasma glucose (FPG) test measures blood sugar after at least 8 hours of fasting. It is one of the commonly used tests to classify whether blood sugar levels fall within the normal range, indicate prediabetes, or meet the diagnostic threshold for diabetes.
Normal
< 100mg/dL
Prediabetes (Impaired Fasting Glucose)
100 – 125mg/dL
Diabetes
≥ 126mg/dL
Fasting blood sugar is within the commonly accepted range.
Fasting blood sugar is above the commonly accepted normal range but below the diabetes threshold. Also called impaired fasting glucose (IFG).
Meets the commonly used diagnostic threshold for diabetes mellitus. Confirmation on a separate day is generally recommended.
Prediabetes Definitions
NIDDK2025
Prediabetes means blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not high enough to be classified as diabetes. It can be identified by any one of three tests: HbA1c of 5.7-6.4%, fasting plasma glucose of 100-125 mg/dL, or a 2-hour OGTT result of 140-199 mg/dL.
HbA1c in the prediabetes range. Any one prediabetes criterion is sufficient for classification.
Fasting plasma glucose in the impaired fasting glucose range. Any one prediabetes criterion is sufficient.
Oral glucose tolerance test result in the impaired glucose tolerance range. Any one prediabetes criterion is sufficient.
Overview
This test measures blood glucose after a fasting period, typically 8-12 hours without food or drink. Fasting glucose is a fundamental screening tool for metabolic disorders including diabetes and prediabetes. Normal fasting glucose ranges from 70-100 mg/dL; levels 100-125 mg/dL suggest prediabetes, and values above 126 mg/dL indicate diabetes. Fasting glucose is less affected by recent meals than non-fasting measurements, providing a stable baseline for assessing long-term glucose control and metabolic health.
